Wife Swap Is Crazy TV

You may find the title of this article alarming. Some of you may have watched Wife Swap and found it an interesting concept. I don’t disagree. I just think it is crazy TV. Those that watch it, can you disagree with me?
For those that don’t watch it or have never seen it, Wife Swap is a TV show that airs on Wednesday nights on ABC. The concept of the show is that they take two, very different, families and remove the wives and swap them between the two families. Now you are thinking to yourself, that doesn’t sound that crazy. Odd yes, but not crazy.
Well why I think it is crazy is how very different the families are. To give you a better idea I have listed some of the families below.
- The other night it was a drag-racing mom who doesn’t cook and has a cluttered house swapping with an
impeccable homemaker who cooks gourmet meals and loves to entertain. - A karaoke-singing mom from Maine swaps with an amateur kickboxer from Colorado.
- A farm wife who homeschools her sons and isolates them from society swaps with a woman who lets her kids do whatever they want, including throwing parties for over 100 people.
- A mom obsessed with her son’s wrestling swaps with an artistic coffee-shop owner who lets her kids
have free rein. - A salon owner who pampers her daughter like a princess swaps with a mom whose clan devotes its time to the family business, bottling deer urine to sell to hunters.
- A strict Christian family that believes chores are for women swaps moms with a family headed by heavily tattooed atheists.
- A mom who runs her home like a boot camp swaps families with a mom who emphasizes fun over chores.
- A cosmetics executive switches places with a wife who loves Halloween so much that she drives a hearse and has a coffin in her living room.
OK, I think that is enough. Now after reading through some of the shows I have seen, if you didn’t think it was crazy TV before, do you agree with me now?
Now to be fair, we watch this show every week. Is it Emmy winning TV? Probably not. I think the best way to describe it is to say it is like a traffic accident. You don’t want to look but you can’t help yourself.
Now the other day I did a story about reality TV titled, Reality TV. Love It Or Hate It? I mentioned Wife Swap in that story too. Wife Swap is considered reality TV and that is why I like it. It is real people, from very different backgrounds, interacting together in a forced situation. It seems almost scripted at times but it still has a certain charm to it. The people usually learn something about themselves and change, at last partially, some of their bad habits.
It is a fun show and if you have nothing better to do give it a try. It is real people and that makes it fun to watch for me. You may even decide to tryout for the show. I will warn you know though, you won’t see my family on there. After watching many of the episodes I have come to one conclusion. My family is too normal to be on Wife Swap.
