Watch For Signs Of Heart Attack
By Bloggaman | May 29, 2008
The other day I had an article on tests you can do to determine if someone may have had a stroke. I was not planning to do articles about watching for certain health issues because I don’t plan to do them regularly. What caused me to do this one was something I saw yesterday morning on “Mike and Mike in the Morning” on ESPN.
Mike Greenberg, who co-hosts with Mike Golic, was talking about an incident he had in his pool over the weekend. He was questioning whether or not he was having a heart attack. I thought at first he was joking, or at least asking if what had happened could be a heart attack. I was surprised to find out that he was still having pains and was truly wondering if he was having a heart attack. I thought this would be a great chance to let people know what symptoms you see when you are having a heart attack.
Below is a list of symptoms I pulled from WebMD.
Symptoms of a heart attack include:
- Discomfort, pressure, heaviness, or pain in the chest, arm or below the breastbone
- Discomfort radiating to the back, jaw, throat or arm
- Fullness, indigestion or choking feeling (may feel like heartburn)
- Sweating, nausea, vomiting or dizziness
- Extreme weakness, anxiety or shortness of breath
- Rapid or irregular heartbeats
During a heart attack, symptoms last 30 minutes or longer and are not relieved by rest or oral medications (medications taken by mouth).
Please understand, I am not a Doctor nor do I play one on TV. This is just information that many people do not know and I wanted to share. I watched a story the other day on Mickey Mantle and learned his son died of a heart attack at age 36. He also had Hodgkin’s Disease but it made me understand that heart attacks can happen at an early age.
If you are having a heart attack do you know what you should do? I have included what WebMD suggests you should do in the case of a heart attack. You should do something immediately if you can because the sooner
the better. Heart damage can be caused if you wait too long.
- Aspirin to prevent blood clotting that may worsen the heart attack.
- Antiplatelets to prevent blood clotting.
- Thrombolytic therapy (”clot busters”) to dissolve any blood clots that are present in the heart’s arteries.
- Any combination of the above
Another thing I heard is that if you think you are having a heart attack, call 911 immediately so they can start treatment ASAP. It also helps because if you come to the hospital in an ambulance, you will likely be seen quicker than if you walked in. If you think you are at risk I suggest you check out the information on WebMD regarding Heart Attacks. It could save your life some day.
