Thank God For The NFL
By Bloggaman | January 13, 2009
Hi all. After getting by the weekend I have to say, while the BCS sucks, the NFL kicks ass. After all, did you catch the games over the weekend? If you didn’t, it is understandable but let me give you a quick reminder of what has taken place since the playoffs got started last week including a look at how the playoffs were seeded. Once I give you the long laborious update I will have a point so stay with me.
AFC -
#1 seed - Tennessee Titans (13-3) #2 seed - Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) #3 seed - Miami Dolphins (11-5) #4 seed - San Diego Chargers (8-8) #5 seed - Indianapolis Colts (12-4) #6 seed - Baltimore Ravens (11-5)So the first week’s games were Baltimore at Miami and Indianapolis at San Diego. Tennessee and Pittsburgh had a bye.
- Baltimore (#6) 27, Miami (#3) 9
- San Diego (#4) 23, Indianapolis (#5) 17
With those games decided we had the following games this past weekend - Baltimore (#6) vs Tennessee (#1) and San Diego #4 vs. Pittsburgh (#2)
- Baltimore (#6) 13, Tennessee (#1) 10
- Pittsburgh (#2) 35, San Diego (#4) 24
Next week the AFC Championship will be Baltimore (#6) vs. Pittsburgh (#2) with the winner going to Super Bowl 43
NFC -
#1 seed - New York Giants (12-4) #2 seed - Carolina Panthers (12-4) #3 seed - Minnesota Vikings (10-6) #4 seed - Arizona Cardinals (9-7) #5 seed - Atlanta Falcons (11-5) #6 seed - Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1)So the first week’s games were Atlanta at Arizona and Philadelphia at Minnesota. NY and Carolina had a bye.
- Philadelphia (#6) 26, Minnesota (#3) 14
- Arizona (#4) 30, Atlanta (#5) 24
With those games decided it left the following games this past weekend - Philadelphia (#6) at New York Giants (#1) and Arizona (#4) at Carolina (#2)
- Philadelphia (#6) 23, New York (#1) 11
- Arizona (#4) 33, Carolina (#2) 13
Next week the NFC Championship will be Philadelphia (#6) vs. Arizona (#4) with the winner going to Super Bowl 43
My Point (as promised)
While I don’t want to dwell on the BCS I do want to use this opportunity to pile on to my post about how The BCS Sucks!! You need not look any further than the NFL playoffs this year to see why the BCS sucks. First of all, if the NFL had followed the BCS it would have had Tennessee playing the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. While we would have crowned a champion, as you can see from the scores above, it would have been the wrong champion.
We are one game away, in each conference, from the Super Bowl and we have no #1 seeds left. We have one #2 seed and no #3 seeds yet we somehow have both #6 seeds still vying for the chance to go to the big game. This is what a playoff is good for, allowing each team a chance to play for it all.
You have two teams in the AFC with two of the better records in that league at 12-4 and 11-5. In the NFC, you have the two teams with the two worst records of the NFC teams in the playoffs. This is why a playoff works so well. You have 12 teams with various winning percentages all playing for one prize, the Super Bowl. If you have a great regular season only to lose in the first round, oh well, that is too bad for you. This is why the NFL playoffs are great.
I don’t know where things will end up but we will know next week. We could have both #6 seeds facing each other in the Super Bowl or they could both be eliminated. I see at least one of them making it in with a great chance of both being there. This is why playoffs are great. You make it in based on record and then get to the big game by playing well and not because a group of people decided who the two most deserving teams were.
I believe a college playoff system would make the BCS bowls more interesting. While it is fun to watch the National Championship game, you know there isn’t as much on the line in the other games. If you make a playoff system, that quickly changes and you get more people watching all the other games too. I am not saying people don’t watch them now, because they do, but put more at stake and the game draws people in. We like drama and a playoff creates its own drama. There must be a reason the BCS doesn’t want to change, I just can’t figure out what that is.
