    Recount

    By Bloggaman | May 26, 2008

In case any of you missed it, last night was the premiere of the movie Recount on HBO. Recount takes a look back at the 2000 Presidential election fiasco in Florida. It is hard to believe it has been nearly eight years Recount Kevin Spaceysince that happened. I, for one, forgot how messy the whole situation was.

The movie stars quite a few big names in various parts. Kevin Spacey stars as Ron Klain, Vice President Gore’s former-Chief of Staff. Laura Dern stars as Secretary of State Katherine Harris. Other stars included Denis Leary, Tom WIlkinson and Ed Begley, Jr.

After watching it I was very pleased with it. The movie itself was excellent. Great acting from all those involved. The movie was directed very well. Kevin Spacey plays the main character in the movie. Everything that happens revolves around him. He was the main force behind the fight for the manual recount. It does a great job of explaining how the whole problem started, why there were problems and why things ended the way they did. After watching the movie I have to admit the ballots looked confusing as hell. I can understand the problems the voters had. I just hope they have since made the process better.

There were some funny parts to the movie, albeit at Katherine Harris’ expense. Laura Dern does an excellent Recount Laura Dernjob of playing Harris but at the same time the movie makes Harris out to be a real wacko. She looks like some kind of Barbie doll gone wrong in the movie. Makeup put on in multiple layers. I am not sure how true the depiction of her was but I can’t imagine she was happy with it. She is made out to be an idiot. I don’t know her so I can’t tell you if she really is or not.

I would recommend the movie to anyone. It is a great lesson in history even if we don’t really know the whole truth. The movie does one other thing though. It makes you wonder what life would be like now had Al Gore won the 2000 election. Do you ever think of it? Consider we would almost certainly not be in Iraq. Gas prices would likely not be near $4 a gallon. Where would Gore’s favorable rating be right now? It could be as low as Bush’s but unlikely. Bush won the 2000 election and in eight years he has driven this country into the ground. Right or wrong, the 2000 election win for Bush was a huge mistake for the country.
