My Top-10 Favorite TV Shows Of All-Time, 6 thru 10
By Bloggaman | May 22, 2008
6. The Sopranos
If you had HBO for the last 10 years you have likely seen an episode or two, at least. If you didn’t have HBO you might have seen the seasons released on DVD by now. If you haven’t seen an episode on The Sopranos and like to watch shows or movies about the mafia, then you need to watch all six seasons on The Sopranos.
Tony Soprano is the head guy from very early on in the show. It shows his daily goings on as he tries to run not only his mafia family but keep him normal family at home together and functioning. For those that haven’t seen this show you are lucky. It used to take about 15 to 18 months between seasons so you had to wait a long time in between. You can go out and rent, or buy, all the seasons now and watch them straight through. Give them a try, you won’t be disappointed.
7. Friends
Here is another recent show that makes my list. When I first saw some previews of this show before it was ever on I thought it looked stupid. Once I watched it for the first time I quickly became a big fan of the show. They had a perfect mix of people that played off each other very well. It again goes to great writing because this show was funny from start to finish. If you want a small taste of it go out and rent, or buy, the Top 10 Friend’s episodes. They have one of my absolute favorites, Roommate Trivia.
8. Hill Street Blues
This show was a great drama about a police precinct in New York, the Hill Street precinct to be exact. I was also pretty young when this first came out. I watched it for the first time and it sucked me in and never let me go.
Bobby Hill and Renko, Belker, Sgt. Esterhaus, Joe Coffey, Capt Furillo and Howard Hunter were all cast members of the show. There are actually quite a bit more but those are the ones I remember the best. It was a different kind of show and not everyone liked it. Some didn’t like how busy things always seemed which made it hard to follow I was told. I didn’t have that problem and it remains one of my favorites to this day.
9. Happy Days
One of my favorite shows growing up. Who didn’t love Richie Cunningham and The Fonz. The Fonz was always cool and Richie, Potsie and Ralph always needed his help to get them out of trouble. This show lasted for 10 long years based on the great cast and stories they were able to put together each week.
The show finally came to an end, or as they say “Jumped the Shark”, when they did an episode where The Fonz actually jumps a shark as part of a bet. From that point on, every time a show goes too long it is said to have “Jumped the Shark” and that term will forever be tied to Happy Days.
10. (tie) Married With Children & Get Smart
I was trying to decide which of these shows got to round out my list. I couldn’t really make that decision so I decided to go with both of them in a tie.
Married With Children was like the complete opposite of the Cosby Show. It was a white family and they weren’t loving and caring towards each other. I had never watched it before it went into syndication. It really looked dumb to me. Well what do I know? Again, once I started watching it I couldn’t stop. Each show was funnier than the last one and always had me in tears from laughing.
The show really took a dive for me when they added another son towards the end of its run. He wasn’t really needed and actually made the show really bad. Not a good move on their part but after so many years you tend to reach for ideas to keep it going.
Get Smart is another show I watched in syndication but I loved it also. Maxwell Smart was Agent 86 and Control was where he worked. His job was to fight the forces of Kaos and the evil Siegfried, played by Bernie Kopell (Doc on “The Love Boat”).
This show was written by Mel Brooks so that gives you an idea of the kind of humor involved. A shoe phone was often used. The cone of silence made regular appearances, although it never seemed to work. The show was a spoof of the James Bond series and it was funny while it lasted. This remains one of my favorites from when I was a kid.
