NL Baseball Predictions - Checking at 1/3rd Mark
By Bloggaman | June 5, 2008
Back before the season started I made my predictions for the upcoming season. With the season basically 1/3rd over I decided to take a look to see how I was doing. I am doing OK but there are a lot of games left to be played. I would change some things but still feel OK with my earlier predictions. Chase Utley is the MVP of the first third of the season and in a big way. Below are my earlier predictions as well as the actual order as of yesterday.
NL East - Prediction
- Mets
- Phillies
- Braves
- Nationals
- Marlins
NL East - Actual (June 4)
- Phillies
- Marlins
- Mets
- Braves
- Nationals
I am sticking with the Mets even though they have played very inconsistently. Willie Randolph may not be the best manager but I think he has enough talent he can win anyway. The Marlins have been an early surprise but I think they will fade as the season wears on.
NL Central - Prediction
- Cubs
- Brewers
- Reds
- Astros
- Pirates
- Cardinals
NL Central - Actual (June 4)
- Cubs
- Cardinals
- Brewers
- Astros
- Reds
- Pirates
The Cubs are still the class on the NL Central but I have to admit the Cardinals start has surprised me. I didn’t think they had the team to win but I was wrong. I am not sure they will hang in there but they have looked good thus far. They are winning with small ball which is why Tony LaRussa is one of the best managers around. The Brewers have had many problems but could be headed in the right direction now.
NL West - Prediction
- Diamondbacks
- Rockies
- Dodgers
- Padres
- Giants
NL West - Actual (June 4)
- Diamondbacks
- Dodgers
- Giants
- Padres
- Rockies
This division has been a shock to me. I expected the D-Backs to play better out of the gate, especially with the addition of Dan Haren. They came out quick but faded just as fast and if not for an inept division, they would be in the middle of the pack. This has been the worst division of 2008.
NL Playoff Teams
Mets, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Brewers (Wild Card)
I am sticking with these choices but the Phillies could make the NL East and the Wild Card closer than I had imagined. Should be another great finish to the baseball season.
NL Awards - Predictions
MVP - Matt Holiday, Rockies (Right now Chase Utley is running away with the MVP)
CY Young - Dan Haren, Diamondbacks (At this point I would pick Carlos Zambrano)
Rookie of the Year - Kosuke Fukudome, Cubs (Still a good choice but Edinson Volquez is close right now)
Biggest Surprise - St. Louis Cardinals
Biggest Dissapointment - Colorado Rockies
